When to Repair vs. Replace Your HVAC System — A Northern Virginia Homeowner’s Guide

By Walter Orellana

Most HVAC systems last 15–20 years with proper maintenance. But as your system ages, you’ll face a decision every homeowner dreads: repair it one more time or invest in a new system.

The general rule of thumb is the 50% rule. If the cost of repair is more than 50% of the cost of a new system, replacement usually makes more financial sense. A $3,000 repair on a 16-year-old system that would cost $7,000 to replace is a borderline call — but factor in the energy savings of a modern unit and replacement wins.

Age matters more than most people think. Even if your system is running, units over 15 years old use significantly more energy than modern equipment. A new high-efficiency system can cut your energy bills by 20–40%, which adds up to thousands over its lifetime.

Warning signs that replacement is near: frequent repairs (more than twice a year), uneven temperatures across rooms, unusual noises that persist after service, and energy bills that keep climbing despite maintenance.

In Northern Virginia, the best time to replace is spring or fall — before peak heating or cooling season. Contractors are less busy, and you’ll avoid the premium pricing that comes with emergency summer AC replacements.
