Your air conditioner usually gives you warning signs weeks or months before a full breakdown. Catching these early means a simple repair instead of an emergency replacement in the middle of July.
Sign one: warm air from the vents. If your AC is running but the air isn’t cold, the most common causes are low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or a dirty evaporator coil. All three are fixable if caught early.
Sign two: unusual noises. Grinding, squealing, or banging sounds indicate mechanical problems — worn bearings, a loose fan blade, or a failing compressor. These don’t fix themselves and get more expensive the longer you wait.
Sign three: short cycling. If your system turns on and off every few minutes instead of running steady 15–20 minute cycles, it’s likely an oversized unit, a refrigerant issue, or a failing thermostat.
Sign four: high humidity indoors. Your AC should dehumidify as it cools. If your home feels sticky even with the AC running, the system isn’t removing moisture properly — often a sign of an undersized unit or low refrigerant.
