How to Choose an HVAC Contractor in Northern Virginia

By Walter Orellana

Every HVAC contractor in Virginia needs a license, but licensing alone doesn’t guarantee quality work. Here’s what to check beyond the basics.

First, ask about experience with your specific system. HVAC covers a wide range — heat pumps, gas furnaces, mini-splits, and commercial systems all require different expertise. A contractor who primarily installs residential gas furnaces may not be the best choice for a ductless mini-split installation.

Second, get a written estimate with line-item detail. A reputable contractor will break out equipment, labor, permits, and disposal separately. A single lump-sum number with no breakdown is a red flag.

Third, check response time. The best contractors respond within hours, not days. If it takes three days to get a callback for an estimate, imagine how long you’ll wait when your AC fails in August.

Fourth, ask about warranty coverage. Quality contractors offer both a manufacturer warranty on equipment and a labor warranty on their installation work. If they only offer the manufacturer warranty, they’re not standing behind their own craftsmanship.
