When to Call a Handyman vs. a Specialist
May 2025
Not every repair needs a licensed contractor. Learn which jobs a skilled handyman can handle and when to call a specialist.
Start with the size of the job
A handyman visit fits contained repairs with a clear finish: the part is installed, the door closes, or the patch is smooth. A specialist is the right call when the work changes how the house is built or how a utility enters it.
Often a fit for a handyman
Furniture assembly, picture and shelf hanging, door adjustments, caulk, small drywall patches, swapping a light fixture on an existing box, and mounting a TV are typical handyman tasks.
Grouping several of those into one visit is usually more efficient than booking a separate trip for each item.
Call a specialist instead
Gas appliance lines, replacing a main electrical panel, opening a structural wall, replacing a roof, sewer-line work, and removing a large tree over a structure are specialist jobs.
If you are not sure, describe the task before anyone starts. A clear no is more useful than a repair that has to be redone.
