The 50% Rule

If a repair quote exceeds 50% of the cost to replace your system — especially on a unit that's 8 years or older — replacement is almost always the smarter investment. You're paying to extend the life of an aging system that will likely need another repair within a season or two.

Age Thresholds That Matter

Central AC systems typically last 12–15 years. Heat pumps run 10–15 years. Furnaces can stretch to 20 years with maintenance. If your system is past these thresholds, factor replacement cost into any repair decision — even a modest repair on an old system can be poor value.

Signs It's Time to Replace

Frequent breakdowns (two or more repairs in a single season), rising energy bills despite normal usage, rooms that never reach temperature, refrigerant leaks on R-22 systems (refrigerant is no longer manufactured), and strange noises that reappear after repairs are all indicators that a new system will cost less over 3–5 years than continued repairs.

When Repair Is the Right Call

A system under 8 years old with a single, clear fault — a failed capacitor, a dirty coil, a bad thermostat — is almost always worth repairing. The system has significant life remaining, and a targeted fix restores full function at a fraction of replacement cost.

How AZA Handles This Conversation

We'll give you the honest comparison. If your system is borderline, we'll show you the math — repair cost versus annualized replacement cost, factoring in efficiency gains from a modern unit. We don't push replacement when repair makes sense, and we don't push repair when it doesn't.
