Building a Metal-Roof Pergola in West Lake Hills — What Texas Summers Taught Me

February 2026·Austin, TX·By Cristian Contra

Why Metal Roofing?

Fabric shade sails degrade in Texas UV within 2–3 years. Wood slats let rain through. Metal roofing reflects heat, sheds water, and lasts decades with zero maintenance. For Austin outdoor living, it’s the best long-term investment.

The Project

A West Lake Hills family wanted a 16x12 pergola over their back patio. They needed shade for summer entertaining and protection from afternoon storms. We designed a steel post-and-beam frame with standing seam metal roofing.

Build Process

We set four steel posts in concrete footings, welded the beam structure on-site, and installed the metal roofing panels with proper pitch for drainage. The entire build took four days. Electrical conduit was run inside the posts for future fan and light installation.

The Result

The family gained a fully shaded outdoor room that stays 15–20 degrees cooler than their old uncovered patio. It handles heavy rain without a leak and the powder-coated frame will look sharp for years.
