The Brief
The homeowner had a straight staircase with a dated wooden railing. They wanted something that felt original to the home — simple, clean iron lines with a matte black finish. No ornamental scrollwork, just honest craftsmanship.
Measurement and Design
We measured the full run on-site, noted the anchor points, and discussed height and spacing with the homeowner. I sketched two options — one with vertical balusters, one with horizontal rails. They chose horizontal for the mid-century feel.
Fabrication
All welding and grinding was done in our shop. We used 1-inch square tube for the top rail and 1/2-inch round bar for the horizontals. Every joint was ground smooth and the entire piece was powder-coated matte black for durability.
Installation Day
We anchored the railing into the stair treads and wall with lag bolts and steel base plates. The whole install took about four hours. The homeowner said it looked like it had always been there — which is exactly what we were going for.
