Tesla Wall Connector
The Tesla Wall Connector is the best charger if you only have Tesla vehicles. It uses the NACS connector, integrates with the Tesla app for charge scheduling and history, and can be daisy-chained for multiple Teslas in a garage. The Gen 3 Wall Connector can also be hardwired at 60A for faster charging than a plug-in EVSE.
Universal J1772 EVSE
A universal EVSE with a J1772 connector works with every non-Tesla EV — Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Rivian, and more. If you have mixed vehicles in your household, or plan to sell your Tesla and buy a different brand, universal is the more flexible choice. Note: Tesla now ships adapters with their vehicles for J1772 compatibility.
“We had both a Tesla and a Mustang Mach-E. Infinite Electric installed a dual-head charger that handles both. — Roger L., Manassas VA”
Circuit Requirements
Both require a 240V circuit. The circuit amperage depends on the charger's amperage rating — typically 50A (for a 40A charger) or 60A (for a 48A charger). We size the circuit and conduit for future flexibility during the initial install.
Our Recommendation
Tesla household with no plans to switch? Install the Wall Connector. Mixed household or unsure? Install a universal 48A EVSE — it's more flexible and equally fast for most vehicles.
