When to Call a Handyman vs. a Specialist — An Alexandria Homeowner's Guide

Faiz · 5 min read

This is one of the most common questions I get. The short answer: if a job doesn't require a licensed permit and doesn't involve your main panel, water main, or structural work, a good handyman can handle it — for a lot less than a specialist.

Call a Handyman For:

  • Running toilet, dripping faucet, leaky P-trap
  • Replacing a light switch, outlet, or fixture (not panel work)
  • Door, window, or cabinet repairs
  • Drywall patches, painting, caulking
  • Furniture assembly and mounting

Call a Licensed Specialist For:

  • Anything involving the electrical panel
  • Main line or shut-off valve issues
  • Structural modifications that require permits
  • Gas line work

The Test

If you're not sure — just call me and describe the problem. I'll tell you honestly if it's something I can handle or if you need a licensed contractor. I'd rather refer you correctly than take a job I shouldn't.

Not sure what you need? Call and describe it — I'll give you a straight answer.
