Doorbell Repair in Fort Washington, MD

A doorbell that doesn't ring means missed deliveries and visitors you never hear coming. Whether your existing wired doorbell failed or you want to upgrade to a smart video doorbell, we diagnose the problem and handle the wiring correctly.

You push the button and hear nothing at all

A completely silent doorbell can fail at three points: the button outside, the chime unit inside, or the low-voltage transformer that powers both. Each has a different fix. We test the transformer voltage first — a dead or under-spec transformer (most need 16V at 10VA) is the most common cause in older homes. If the transformer is fine, we test continuity at the button and the chime. Most wired doorbell repairs are resolved in one visit.

Your doorbell hums or buzzes but doesn't chime

A continuous hum usually means the button is stuck in the pressed position — either jammed physically or the contacts have fused. Left long enough this can burn out the transformer or char the chime. We replace the button, inspect the transformer, and test the full circuit to confirm the hum is gone and the chime fires cleanly on the next press.

You want to install a Ring, Nest, or other smart video doorbell

Most smart doorbells need 16–24V AC at 30VA or more — more than many original doorbell transformers provide. We check your existing transformer rating, upgrade it if needed, confirm the existing doorbell wiring is usable, and mount the new device cleanly. If there's no existing doorbell wiring at all, we can run new low-voltage wire to the location you want.

The chime rings by itself or at random times

Phantom ringing is almost always a button with failing contacts that briefly close the circuit on their own. In older homes it can also be caused by a loose wire making intermittent contact inside the wall. We swap the button first — it's the most common cause and costs very little — and inspect the wiring at both the button and the chime if the problem persists.
