Your electrical panel is the nerve center of your home's power. When it can't keep up with demand — or when the hardware itself is failing — the signs are hard to miss. Here's what to look for and what upgrading actually involves.
Breakers that trip repeatedly under normal load
If you're resetting a breaker more than once in a week under ordinary use, the circuit is telling you something. Repeated trips under normal load — running the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time, for example — usually mean the circuit is undersized for the devices on it, or that the breaker itself is wearing out. Older 100A panels were designed for homes with far fewer electrical loads than a modern household runs. A 200A upgrade gives you the headroom to run everything without tripping.
Flickering lights across multiple rooms
Flickering in a single fixture is usually a loose connection at the switch or the fixture itself. But flickering that moves through multiple rooms, or that gets worse when a heavy appliance starts up, points to a voltage drop issue at the panel. This can indicate a loose main connection, a failing main breaker, or insufficient service amperage. An electrician can test the panel under load and tell you whether the source is inside the panel or at the utility connection.
The panel is more than 25 to 30 years old
Circuit breakers have a rated lifespan, and panels built before 1990 may have breakers that no longer trip reliably under overload. A breaker that doesn't trip is more dangerous than one that trips too often — it allows a fault to continue until something overheats. If your panel is original to a home built before 1990, a licensed electrician should inspect it and test the breakers for proper operation even if you haven't noticed problems yet.
You have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under overload. Insurance companies have started refusing coverage or charging higher premiums on homes with these panels installed. If you have either brand, replacement is the right move — not a repair. We remove the old equipment completely, install a listed modern panel, pull the required permit, and schedule the county inspection.
You're adding a 240V appliance and there's no room
An EV charger, a hot tub, a new HVAC unit, or an electric dryer all require a dedicated 240V circuit. If your current panel has no open breaker slots, you have two options: a tandem breaker where the load allows it, or a full panel upgrade. We assess the available capacity and the load you're adding, then recommend the solution that's safe and code-compliant — not just the cheapest workaround.
What the upgrade process looks like
A panel upgrade typically takes four to six hours for a straightforward 200A replacement. We shut off utility power at the meter, remove the old panel, install the new service entrance equipment and breakers, reconnect all circuits, and restore power. In Prince George's County the work requires a permit and a final inspection from the county — we handle both so you don't have to manage any of it. Once the inspector signs off, the permit is on record for your home's history.
