GFCI Outlets: Where They're Required and Why

Ground fault circuit interrupter outlets are one of the most effective safety devices in a home. They're also one of the most misunderstood. Here's where they're required, how they work, and what to do if yours aren't working correctly.

What a GFCI actually does

A GFCI outlet monitors the difference in current flowing out on the hot wire versus returning on the neutral wire. Under normal conditions those values match. When a ground fault occurs — like current taking a path through a person or water — the difference spikes, and the GFCI trips in about 1/40th of a second. That's fast enough to prevent electrocution in most scenarios. A standard circuit breaker protects against overloads and shorts; a GFCI protects against ground faults. You need both.

Where the NEC requires GFCI protection

The National Electrical Code requires GFCI protection at outlets in any location where water and electricity can interact. That means all kitchen countertop outlets, all bathroom outlets, all garage outlets, all unfinished basement outlets, all outdoor outlets, outlets near swimming pools and hot tubs, and outlets in crawl spaces. The code has expanded these requirements with each edition, so a home wired in the 1970s or 1980s may not have GFCI protection in locations that now require it — even if it was code-compliant when built.

How to check whether your outlets are GFCI-protected

Not every GFCI-protected outlet is a GFCI outlet. A single GFCI outlet wired correctly can protect all the outlets downstream of it on the same circuit — those outlets may be standard-looking receptacles with a label that reads 'GFCI Protected.' To test a standard outlet, use an outlet tester with a GFCI test button. To test a GFCI outlet directly, press the Test button — the outlet and anything downstream of it should lose power. Press Reset to restore it. If the outlet doesn't trip or doesn't reset, it needs to be replaced.

When a GFCI outlet trips and won't reset

A GFCI that trips immediately when you press Reset is detecting a fault on the circuit. The most common causes are a wiring error (hot and neutral reversed, or a downstream outlet wired incorrectly), moisture in a junction box or device, or a failing appliance plugged into the circuit. Disconnect everything on the circuit first and try to reset — if it holds, plug devices back in one at a time to find the fault source. If it trips even with nothing plugged in, the GFCI itself may be faulty or the wiring issue is behind the wall.

The difference between GFCI and AFCI protection

GFCI outlets protect against ground faults — current leaking to ground through an unintended path, including a person. AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breakers protect against arc faults — the kind of intermittent sparking inside walls that can start fires without tripping a standard breaker. Modern code requires AFCI breakers on most bedroom and living area circuits, and GFCI protection at the outlet level in wet locations. They address different failure modes and both are required in their respective areas.

When to call an electrician vs. replace it yourself

Replacing a failed GFCI outlet at a countertop or bathroom location is straightforward if you're comfortable working with wiring and you shut off the circuit at the breaker before starting. The key detail is identifying which wires are the 'line' connection (from the panel) and which are the 'load' connection (feeding downstream outlets) — reversing them defeats the GFCI protection for the outlets downstream. If you're not sure, or if the outlet trips immediately after installation, it's worth having an electrician verify the wiring. A miswired GFCI provides no protection at all.
