Switching from a standard wall outlet to a Level 2 home charger is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement most EV owners make. Here's what the installation actually involves — from the first site visit to the final county inspection.

Why Level 2 charging is worth it

A standard 120V outlet adds roughly 4 to 5 miles of range per hour. If you drive 40 miles a day, you're looking at 8 to 10 hours to recover that range on a Level 1 plug. A 240V Level 2 charger on a dedicated 50A circuit gives you 20 to 30 miles per hour — meaning you plug in when you get home and wake up with a full charge regardless of how far you drove. The difference in convenience is immediate.

The site visit: what we look at first

Before any work starts, we evaluate three things: the panel's current load and available ampacity, the distance and routing path from the panel to where you want the charger, and whether a permit will be required. In Prince George's County, a new 240V circuit always requires a permit. We figure out the cleanest conduit or cable path — through the attic, basement, or along the exterior — and give you a fixed-price estimate before we schedule the installation day.

Panel capacity: what happens if there's no room

Most homes in Fort Washington have 100A or 200A service. A 40A or 50A EV charger circuit is a significant load, and not every panel has an open slot or available ampacity to add it cleanly. When we find a panel that's at or near capacity, we walk you through the options: a load management device that shares an existing circuit, a tandem breaker where the panel manufacturer allows it, or a panel upgrade. We won't install a circuit that creates a safety problem just to close a sale.

The charger options: NEMA 14-50 outlet vs. hardwired EVSE

You have two installation approaches. A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in any EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) and swap chargers if you get a different car. A hardwired EVSE is mounted permanently and looks cleaner on the wall. Either approach requires the same dedicated 240V circuit — the only difference is the termination at the end. Most homeowners opt for a NEMA 14-50 outlet because it gives them flexibility, but we install both.

Pulling the permit and scheduling the inspection

A 240V circuit for an EV charger requires a permit from Prince George's County Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement. We pull the permit before work starts, which means we're on record as the contractor and you don't have to manage paperwork. After installation, we contact the county to schedule the inspection. The inspector confirms the work meets code, signs off, and the permit closes. This matters for homeowner's insurance and for resale — an uninspected circuit is a liability.

How long it takes

A standard EV charger installation — existing panel with open capacity, garage or carport mounting within 30 feet of the panel — typically takes three to four hours. A longer conduit run, an attic or exterior cable path, or a panel that needs load balancing adds time. We give you a realistic time estimate at the site visit so there are no surprises on installation day.
