Floating vs. floor-mount vanities: what’s right for your space

By Urban Grain · March 2025 · 4 min read

Floating and floor-mount vanities can both look great, but they solve different problems. The decision affects storage, wall preparation, plumbing placement, cleaning, and how visually open the bathroom feels.

Before choosing based on a photo, look at the room size, what you need to store, and what is happening inside the wall.

Floating vanities feel lighter

A floating vanity mounts to the wall and leaves visible floor beneath it. That open floor can make a smaller bathroom feel less crowded and makes routine floor cleaning easier. The clean horizontal line also works naturally in modern and transitional bathrooms.

But the wall has to support it

A floating vanity needs proper wall support and careful plumbing coordination. In an existing bathroom, the wall may need to be opened so blocking can be added and supply or drain locations can be adjusted. It is best to solve those details before the vanity is built.

Floor-mount vanities usually offer more storage

A floor-mount vanity uses the full height down to the floor or toe kick, which can allow deeper drawers and more storage in the same footprint. It also tends to feel more furniture-like and works well when the room has enough space to carry that visual weight.

Choose around how the bathroom is used

For a small powder room, visual openness may matter more than maximum storage. In a primary bathroom shared by two people, drawer space and linen storage may be the bigger priority. A floating vanity paired with a tall linen cabinet can also balance both needs.

The best vanity layout starts with plumbing, storage, and clearances. Style comes after those three pieces are working.
