Playset Safety Checklist: What to Verify After Assembly

A newly assembled playset looks exciting — but a quick safety check before first use can prevent serious injuries. Here's the checklist every parent should run through.

Whether your playset was assembled professionally or by a motivated group of relatives, a post-assembly safety check is non-negotiable. Here's what to verify.

Structural integrity

  • All bolts and fasteners are tight — none loose or missing
  • Main frame is level and doesn't rock under load
  • Ground anchors are installed and secured (required for most wooden sets)
  • No splintered or cracked lumber, especially on load-bearing members

Moving components

  • Swings hang level, chains/ropes have no fraying or kinks
  • Slide surface is smooth, no protrusions or sharp edges at the exit
  • Climbing rungs are secure and properly spaced
  • Any gates or enclosure panels open/close correctly

Clearance zones

ASTM guidelines call for at least 6 feet of clearance on all sides of a playset, measured from the outermost swing arc. Verify that fences, walls, trees, and other structures are outside this zone.

Ground surface

The area under and around the playset should have 6–12 inches of impact-absorbing material (mulch, rubber, or engineered wood fiber) extending the full clearance zone.
