A Seasonal Gutter Maintenance Guide for DC Metro Homes

Learn what to check throughout the year to keep gutters, downspouts, fascia, and drainage paths working correctly around your home.

Gutters have one basic job: collect roof runoff and move it away from the building. When that drainage path becomes blocked or damaged, water can overflow near siding, fascia, foundations, walkways, and landscaping.

Spring: Check Winter Damage

After winter, look for gutters that have pulled away from the fascia, loose fasteners, separated joints, damaged downspouts, and debris left from winter weather.

Run water through the system when practical. Water should move toward downspouts without sitting in long sections of gutter.

Summer: Watch Heavy Rain

A strong rainstorm is one of the easiest times to notice drainage problems. Look for water spilling over the gutter edge, leaking from joints, or collecting near the foundation.

Overflow does not always mean the gutter is too small. A clogged outlet, blocked downspout, poor pitch, or damaged section can create the same symptom.

Fall: Remove Leaves and Organic Debris

Homes near mature trees may need more frequent gutter checks during fall. Wet leaves can form dense blockages around gutter outlets and downspouts.

Check the downspouts too: A clean gutter cannot drain properly if the downspout is blocked.

Winter: Pay Attention to Ice and Standing Water

Ice along the eaves can have several causes. Gutters are only one part of that system. Roof insulation, ventilation, temperatures, and drainage can all matter.
