Remove your current doorbell button. If you see two small wires coming out of the wall, you have wiring. If nothing is there or you have a battery-powered button, you're starting fresh.
The transformer requirement for wired doorbells
Most wired video doorbells require 16–24V AC. Many older homes have 10V or 12V transformers — enough for a mechanical chime, not enough for a video doorbell. The transformer (usually in the mechanical room, basement, or near the chime box) needs to be checked.
When battery is the right call
No existing wiring, a transformer that can't be easily upgraded, or a rental where you can't make modifications — battery models solve all three. They require periodic charging but have no wiring complexity.
