No Heat in Winter: What to Do Right Now

2025-12-20·4 min read·By David Moreno

Step 1: Check the Thermostat

Make sure it's set to "Heat" and the temperature is set above the current room temperature. Check the batteries if it's battery-powered. This sounds obvious, but David estimates 10% of no-heat calls are thermostat issues.

Step 2: Check the Filter and Power

A severely clogged filter can shut down a furnace via the high-limit safety switch. Check the filter and replace if dirty. Also verify the furnace power switch (looks like a light switch near the unit) is on, and check your circuit breaker.

Step 3: What NOT to Do

Do not try to restart a furnace that smells like gas — leave the house and call your gas company. Do not use your oven or stove for heating. Do not run a generator indoors. These cause real emergencies every winter in the DC area.

Step 4: Call D&D

If the thermostat, filter, and power are all fine and you still have no heat, it's time to call a pro. D&D offers same-day emergency furnace repair — including weekends. David's team will get your heat back on safely and quickly.
