Strong wind, falling branches, hail, and heavy rain can damage roofing materials. Some problems are obvious from the ground, while others are difficult to spot without a closer inspection.
First, Stay on the Ground
Do not climb onto a wet, damaged, or unfamiliar roof. Look from a safe location for missing shingles, displaced materials, fallen branches, damaged gutters, bent flashing, or debris on the roof.
Check Inside the Home
Inspect ceilings and accessible attic areas for new water stains, moisture, dripping, damp insulation, or daylight coming through openings.
Document What You Can See
Take clear photographs of visible damage from safe locations. Include wider photos for context and closer photos when possible.
Prevent Additional Interior Damage
If water is entering the home, move belongings away from the affected area and collect dripping water when it is safe to do so.
Request a Roofing Inspection
A contractor can inspect roofing materials, flashing, penetrations, valleys, gutters, and other areas that may have been affected by the storm.
If Insurance Is Involved
Review your own policy and follow your insurer's reporting requirements. Coverage differs by policy and damage type, so avoid assuming a repair will automatically be covered.
