Saltwater Pool Care: What to Check Beyond Chlorine

Eyob Bezuneh · October 8, 2026 · 3 min read

A Saltwater Pool Is Still a Chlorine Pool

A lot of people hear "saltwater" and picture a pool that looks after itself. It doesn't work that way. The salt system makes the sanitizer for your pool, and that sanitizer is chlorine, so the water still needs regular testing and balancing like any other pool in Scottsdale or Phoenix.

What We Test on a Saltwater Pool

On a saltwater pool, we do everything on a standard service visit and then check the parts that are specific to a salt system. We test the salt level, check how the cell is operating, and run full chemistry, so we see the whole picture rather than one reading.

  • •Salt level
  • •Salt cell operation
  • •Full water chemistry: pH, chlorine, alkalinity and stabilizer

Why the Cell Needs Attention

The salt cell is the part of the system that actually makes chlorine. If the cell isn't working well, chlorine drops, and water quality follows close behind. That's why checking cell operation is part of our service on every saltwater pool, not something we wait to look at until the water turns.

Pro Tip

If your water starts slipping and the chemistry looks off, ask us to look at the cell before you start adding extra products.

Arizona Sun Still Matters

Arizona's strong sun breaks chlorine down faster than in milder places, and monsoon dust can shift your chemistry quickly. A saltwater pool isn't exempt from either one. The system keeps making chlorine, but the sun and the dust keep working against it, so regular testing still matters here.

Signs Your Saltwater Pool Needs a Check

Some signs are easy to spot from the patio. Cloudy or green-tinged water, chemistry that won't stay balanced, or equipment that isn't behaving the way it usually does are all good reasons to call. You don't need to figure out the cause yourself; that's what a service visit is for.

Pro Tip

Note what you're seeing and when it started. It helps us narrow things down faster when we arrive.

Folding Saltwater Care Into Weekly Service

Our weekly maintenance includes water testing, chemical adjustment, skimming, wall brushing, basket emptying and an equipment check. On a saltwater pool, we add the salt and cell checks to that same visit, and we document every visit so you know what was done.
