The ceiling box is the first question
Ceiling fans weigh significantly more than light fixtures and move while running. An electrical box rated only for a light fixture will fail under a fan's weight and vibration. Before purchasing a fan, confirm that the existing box is fan-rated — or budget for a box replacement as part of the installation. This is the single most common issue encountered during fan installs.
Wiring requirements
A ceiling fan with a light kit needs two switched circuits to operate the fan and light independently from wall switches. Many older homes have only a single switched hot wire at the ceiling — which means the fan and light run together. The options are running a new wire, using a remote control kit that allows independent control over one wire, or accepting that both operate on the same switch.
Ceiling height and blade clearance
Standard ceiling fans require 7 feet of floor-to-blade clearance. In a room with an 8-foot ceiling, a standard down-rod drops the fan too low. Flush-mount (hugger) fans eliminate the down-rod and keep blades at the ceiling, but they move less air because the blade-to-ceiling gap restricts airflow. The right choice depends on room height and how much air movement matters.
Balancing after installation
A fan that wobbles after installation is usually a blade balance issue. Most fans include a balancing kit — small clips that attach to blade brackets to correct weight distribution. Running through the balancing process before calling the job done takes fifteen minutes and eliminates the vibration that shortens motor life.
